Making Unforgettable Characters, 2 sessions with Sarah Thankam Mathews

How do you write the sort of character who feels like a real person, the kind of character the reader feels like they know, are deeply invested in, will miss when the book is done? This is an interactive and generative craft class focused on making memorable, three-dimensional, and compelling major characters, in your fiction or nonfiction. Craft pointers and exercises around writing dialogue, climax, character-building, and ethics will be discussed.

Class are taught over Zoom, in two 1.5-hour sessions a week apart, with writing exercises and discussions conducted in breakout rooms.

Sarah Thankam Mathews grew up between Oman and India, immigrating to the United States in her late teens. Her work has been published in Best American Short Stories and she is a recipient of fellowships from the Asian American Writers’ Workshop and the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. In 2020, she founded the mutual aid group Bed-Stuy Strong. All This Could Be Different, Mathews’ debut novel, was named an NYT Editor’s Choice, featured in multiple Best of 2022 lists, and shortlisted for the Discover Prize and the National Book Award.
